Loft insulation installation
What's involved?
So you know why you should get loft insulation installed and the grants that are available to help you, but what does getting loft insulation installed actually entail?
Below is a guide which explains what happens at each stage of the process. It really couldn't be any simpler!
The assessment process
Once you have arranged your free loft insulation survey by applying online or by calling 0845 601 1361, the Loft Lagger assessor will:
- Require access to your loft
- Check your loft is suitable for insulation
- Conduct a survey which looks at the depth, condition and coverage of any existing loft insulation
- Identify any additional requirements that you may need for the installation to take place, such as removal of any personal belongings, increasing the size of your loft hatch, or the requirement for additional ventilation (additional services may be chargeable)
- Provide you with a copy of the completed survey and outline the nature of any work to be undertaken, including any necessary additional chargeable works and the total cost payable by you (if applicable)
- Complete paperwork required to access your loft insulation grant
The installation process

Loft Lagger loft insulation installers will ensure that your loft insulation is brought up to the latest building regulation standards with minimum fuss and disruption. The Loft Lagger installer will:
- Prepare for the job, including laying dust sheets to prevent any mess
- Lay the new insulation. For insulation 'top-ups' new insulation will be laid over existing loft insulation
- Ensure electrical cables are lifted or uncovered to prevent overheating
- Ensure there is adequate ventilation through the eaves to prevent condensation build up
- Lag any cold water tanks and piping that are not adequately insulated and lay boardwalks for service access
- Insulate and draft proof the loft hatch
- Remove any surplus debris and tidy up the work area
How can you help?
You can help with the installation of your new loft installation by:
- Ensuring your driveway is clear for our loft insulation installers (for van access)
- Show the installer where the nearest power points are located
- Clearing personal belongings and boarding (Loft Lagger can perform this service for a standard hourly rate)
- Upon completion, check the loft insulation installed and sign a form to confirm that the work has been carried out to your satisfaction
What else do you need to know?
- Loft insulation usually takes between 1 and 3 hours to install
- The mineral wool insulation used is fully approved, fire resistant, and non-hazardous to your health
- As joists are usually covered by the loft insulation, it's recommended that you use crawl boards when accessing your loft following installation. Walk boards will be fitted where water tanks are present to allow maintenance
- It is not recommended that you store items on top of the new insulation as this could reduce its effectiveness
When can't we install loft insulation?
We aim to assist everyone in getting their loft insulated, however this may not be possible if:
- There is no loft access or access is restricted. However our installers can arrange to have a suitable loft hatch fitted
- There are large amounts of personal belongs stored in the loft preventing insulation laying. However our installers also offer clearance services if you are unable to remove the items yourself
- Your loft is fully boarded - unless you are happy for the insulation to be laid over the boarding
- There is any damp present. However our installers will advise on corrective measures to prevent damp
- You require under tile, flat roof, or under floor insulation. We can only install insulation between the joists on the floor of the loft
- You have a pest problem, or if there is evidence of bats or birds being present in your loft
- You intend to do the work yourself. We can only access grants if the loft insulation is installed by one of our trained professionals
